Dangers of Surgery Abroad - Drs. Moore and Miklos treat two women in one week that had botched surgery after travelling to other countries to have their surgery

Why Americans traveling internationally can pose many dangers and complications, which may mean you would end up spending more money in the long run.

The term “medical tourism” is a term labeled by travel agencies and the media to describe the rapidly growing practice of Americans travelling across international borders to obtain all types of health care. Many surgical procedures performed overseas cost significantly less than the price here in the United States.

Though there are many qualified surgeons practicing all over the world, it can be appealing to women seeking cosmetic vaginal surgery to travel abroad to save money and get a cheap surgery. Traveling internationally can pose many dangers and complications, which may mean you, would end up spending more money in the long run.

Some risks that can occur when traveling for surgery are:

  • Unable to verify the surgeon’s credentials and certifications. Are they really qualified to perform this procedure?
  • What exposure to infectious diseases will you have if you travel outside North America and Europe?
  • What is the quality of post-operative care? Facility standards abroad are different than those required in the United States.
  • Once home, you might have a difficult time contacting your surgeon, which will be difficult to deal with if any complications occur.
  • Infection, Botched Labiaplasty, Labiaplasty Gone Wrong, Unsatisfactory Labiaplasty, Labia Amputation & Poor Cosmetic Vaginal Surgery

Below are before and after pictures of two patients that came to Dr. Moore and Dr. Miklos to have their labia revised (corrected) after traveling abroad to have their surgery done initially. Both women thought that they would save a lot of money by traveling abroad, but both had complications and needed to have their surgeries revised by an expert, which ultimately cost them more than they would have spent staying at home OR traveling to expert surgeons like Dr. Miklos and Moore in Atlanta.

Patient #1 - Botched Labia and Perineoplasty surgery in Asia. Patient travelled to Asia to have surgery as found out it would be much cheaper to have surgery there than in the US. She ended up with a vaginal opening that was so small she could not even insert a finger in it and certainly could not have intercourse. Additionally, her labia was botched, one side completely removed, the other asymmetric and the prepuce botched...also causing her pain. She travelled to Atlanta where Dr. Moore was able to revise this botched surgery and achieve an outcome she is very happy with. She is able to have intercourse and is very happy with the cosmetic appearance.

Before labiaplasty revision
Picture #1 - Pre-op: The patient is shown to have asymmetrical labia repair, excess skin on left and introitus so small she could not have intercourse. The opening of the vagina would barely allow one finger inside.
Before labiaplasty revision
Picture #2 - Demonstrates how small the opening of the vagina is secondary to the fact that skin was brought across the opening of the vagina making it non-functional for intercourse.
Before labiaplasty revision
Picture #3 - Shows a gloved finger on exam demonstrating the false skin shelf that was built up over the opening of the vagina, in essence closing it off.

After labiaplasty revision
Picture #4 - Demonstrates the appearance after surgical revision by Dr Moore and Miklos. The skin shelf was taken down, the opening reconstructed and the extra prepuce skin reduced (this skin was causing her discomfort and pain and she did not like the appearance.

After surgery the patient recovered well, she is ecstatic about the appearance of the vagina and she is now able to have pain-free intercourse!

Patient 1 Testimonial

I know you have heard all kinds of "Thank You" over the years in your profession, so let me keep it simple by saying "My world is nicer because of you." Thank you so much for changing my life. You gave me the best Christmas Gift anyone has ever given me.”

Patient #2 - Botched Labiaplasty surgery in Spain. Patient travelled to Spain to have her labiaplasty surgery done where she suffered an outcome she was very unhappy with. She had poor cosmetic results and also discomfort and pain from the asymmetry of the procedure. She travelled to Atlanta for revision by Dr. Moore and Miklos and is very happy with her results... but wishes she came to see them in the first place.

Before labiaplasty revision
Picture #1- Patient had botched labial reduction surgery in Spain. She was very unhappy with the results as they did not remove any of the superior prepuce and left a great deal more skin on the left than the right for a very assymetric appearance. She felt that it looked worse than before her surgery and was very distraught. She travelled to see Dr Moore and Miklos in Atlanta for surgical revision of the labia and prepuce.
After labiaplasty revision
Immediate Post op Labial Revision surgery by Dr Moore and Miklos. The excess superior and lateral prepuce was reduced on both sides and the excess skin reduced on the the left in order to have both sides match. She healed without any problems and is very happy with her final results! She wishes she did not try to save money by having the procedure done in another country and would have had it with Dr Moore in the first place!
